The Frostbite series got off to a great start last Sunday at CLYC. Ian Roche and Tim Gibbons aided by James McNulty were in charge of affairs. It was dubious whether there would be enough wind for a race as the boats launched but just before the start, the wind picked up and shifted enough for the course to need relaid. Gibbons had this sorted in no time and both fleets got off to a great start... for some. Rooney and McDonagh were first out of the stalls like the thoroughbreds they are but Dara O'Connor and the McLaughlins got the better line to the windward mark and it was all over for Rooney from there. McLaughlins took the bullet though Rooney/McDonagh managed to salvage a second place from O'Connor.
In the B Fleet Rachel McKay continued her good form with a win over David Corkey in second and Matthew McNulty in third. Mairead McConville in her first ever race took a great fourth place.
With most of this season's trophies sorted out and the Dinner Dance next Saturday it was Rooney/McDonagh who came out as top sailors for 2012 in the A fleet and Conor Quinn as top gun in the B Fleet. There are still a few tickets left. See www.clyc.info for details.
Paddy Rooney and Catherine McDonagh.
