Topper Ulster Championships at CLYC

Last weekend 52 young sailors from all over Ireland descended on Killowen for this year's Ulster Championships. With a good squad of locals, hopes were high for a home victory.

The weather forecast for day one was not great but Race Officers Chris O’Hare and Paul Bradley managed to get two races in, despite wind gusting to 35 knots and big seas. There was a lot of work for the safety boats to do with up to 10 boats capsized at a time. Medical Officer Mick McCann was kept busy with an assortment of capsize related injuries.

Day two was much more hopeful with wind from the north west, force 2-3. Four races back to back kept the sailors on their toes especially local hopeful Conor O’Farrell who was caught napping and missed a start causing him to plummet down the scoreboard.

Other locals sailing well were Conor Quinn, Rachel McKay, Stephen Finnegan, Anna McNulty, Trudy O’Hare, Katie O’Farrell, David Corkey, Hannahelisa Smith, Sean Lane and Sophie O’Hare. Big events like this are great experience for juniors who will never again be afraid of a startline with 20 boats having managed so well against 50 this weekend.

Final Results
1st Overall - Douglas Power WHSC, 1st Lady - Laura Gilmore SLYC. Local results - Conor Quinn 3rd U14 and Conor O’Farrell 3rd U17. Sophie O’Hare received the Best Smile award.

The Orr Trophy continues on Tuesday nights and summer courses are starting soon so if you haven’t already, get on to www.clyc.info and book a place.
