At last the weather gods smiled, the tide was in, it was unseasonably warm and the wind blew 10 knots from the south-east. Michael O’Hare and Osmond Morris took charge of a fine fleet of 24 boats, and set a perfect line with no advantage to be gained at either end. A clean start to the A fleet race apart from a bit of spirited banter between the Hon Sailing Secretary and the Browne/Burgess boat. No turns were witnessed and Burgess certainly was having “Gnome” of it. The best start was undoubtedly in the McLaughlin Laser 2000 who got a quick port tack in and clean air took them first to the windward mark where they remained for the rest of the race, Burgess/Brown almost caught them at one point but the shifting wind cursed them and they fell back again. The Cranley Brothers, Brian and Kieran (formerly known as the Cranley Boys) languished at the rear of the fleet, obviously laden down by the weight of silver cups collected last week.
The B Fleet race was led on the water by Kate MacAdorey who is improving all the time in her Laser 4.7. She was closely pursued by Conor O’Farrell in the Topper. Full results are available on the web site.
After the race the AGM was held in the Club and had a record attendance. A spirited debate on the Pros and Cons of a personal handicap system was held and the new committee agreed to investigate it for next season. The committee was re-elected with a few changes and some new blood. Chris Cassidy is now the Vice-Commodore, Chris O’Hare is Hon Training Officer, and Aidan McKay and Pat Dunbar have joined the committee also.
Andy Brown and Diane Burgess-Gnome racing well today.
A fine fleet for a Frostbite event off Killowen.
