Last Sunday the First Glenny cup was held under Tim Gibbons' expert command. Traditionally this race goes to Warrepoint and back. Unfortunately as one of the rescue boats was playing up there was not enough safety cover to travel to Warrenpoint and the race was held at Killowen over a standard Olympic course. With a mass A and B fleet start and 20 boats over a short line there was much shouting and gentle banter at the gun! The McLaughlins got the best start and reached the windward mark first but the Cranley boys were hot on their heels along with McLaughlin Junior and Rooney/McDonagh. Several disastrous mark roundings relegated the McLaughlins to fourth with Rooney taking third and the Cranleys so close to McLaughlin Junior that we had to wait for the results calculation. Four seconds was all that robbed the Cranleys of that sought after cup. Ah well, there’s always the second Glenny. Anna McNulty in top form, was first B Fleet boat ahead of many A fleeters.
In the second race the Cranleys were eager to take advantage of their new found form but after a tragic start the McLaughlins found a little extra and knocked them into third, behind the seemingly unbeatable offspring who again took line honours. A strong performance today also from David Hicks and Colin Matthews who are getting to grips with their gennaker.
Wednesday Series
In the A fleet, Finnegan and Hughes posted their best result this season with a third as did Philip O’Connor with a second, Old Reliable Rooney took another first. B Fleet racing was very tight as the Topper Ulsters approach with Conor Quinn taking honours ahead of Stephen Finnegan and Anna McNulty.
Gannet Wins Early Cruiser Series
On Saturday last, the 25 knot North Westerlies favoured Brian McCann’s Gannet, which managed to beat Gerry Byrne and John Gray in Atlantic Diva by just under a minute and a half. This allowed Gannet to overtake Michael O’Hare’s Aurora in the Early Season.
As that was the last race of the series, Gannet is the winner of the Early Season.
Next Saturday, 16-Jun-12, will be the Cruiser Oyster Pearl race, so there will be no CLYC cruiser race, and the following Saturday, 23-Jun-12, there will again be no CLYC cruiser race as the Ulster Topper Championships will be held at CLYC.
The CLYC Cruiser Mid Season will start on Saturday 30-Jun-12 at the usual start time of 2:00 pm exactly, and all cruisers around Carlingford Lough are reminded that they are welcome to join in these races. Sailing Instructions can be found on the CLYC website www.clyc.info
