Quinn Wins Junior Regatta

Last Saturday at CLYC the first ever regatta specifically for new sailors was run by the junior sailors at the club. Race officer Feilim O’Connor ably assisted by David Gilfedder took charge of a fleet of 14 boats for 3 races in light but shifty winds and with a strong ebbing tide. For once sailing secretary Philip O’Connor took a back seat (in the bar!) and let his juniors get on with it.

Race one was won by Sophie O’Hare with David Corkey in second and Stephen McKay in third. Race two was won by Anna McNulty with Conor Quinn in second and Trudy O’Hare in third. So it was wide open before race three, Conor Quinn sealed a victory overall by taking first, Stephen McKay took second and a third place cost Sophie O’Hare dearly as she was second overall only on countback.

Stephen McKay was best Under 16, Anna McNulty best under 14 and David Corkey best under 12.

Club racing on Sunday was nearly cancelled again due to strong winds but eventually Kieran Cranley allowed the A fleet only to launch. The first race was a game of cat and mouse between Tim Gibbons and Henry and Liz McLaughlin, unfortunately the cat went hungry and Gibbons took the win by a few seconds only. The second race was a bit more exciting with a big gust just after the start thinning the fleet substantially and leaving the McLaughlins and Mickey McKevitt/Eamon O’Connor both upside down. Gibbons was in full flight taking another win, Ian Roche just behind in second and Philip O’Connor in third.

This leaves the Cranleys with yet another trophy for the Mid Season, will they leave any silver for anyone else this year?
