There is usually one day of the year where things are perfect, wind, sun and tide. If you didn’t sail last Sunday you missed it. Beautiful force 3-4 from the south, nice sun and a great course set by Paul and Ita Bradley.
Race one saw Davy Hicks and Colin Matthews try a port flyer, but they only managed to fly into the rest of the fleet ...all on starboard. Appropriate blessings were issued by all involved! Slipping through the chaos unnoticed Ian Roche and Rooney/McDonagh took the lead, with the McLaughlins, Connla Conway and Kieran Cranley with Tim MacAdorey (rumours have it the boys have fallen out) in pursuit. But the Derrycamma Express could not be de-railed today as Rooney, buoyant from Leinster's victory led to the finish. The McLaughlins just managed to pass Ian Roche to take a poor second.
Race two, and again Rooney was unstoppable from the start, but Cranley and MacAdorey were fighting hard for second and held off the McLaughlins until the run where Kieran was sorely missing his ace spinnaker man. An error at the leeward mark then cost Roche both second and third place. Hicks/Matthews still getting to grips with their Bahia but will soon be challenging the established order.
In the B Fleet with six toppers away at the Traveller in East Down there was still a good turnout. Kate MacAdorey took the bullet in race one and two. Rachel McKay took a couple of seconds. The big turn-up of the day was Aidan McKay hitting the podium with 3rd in race one. However Katie O’Farrell denied him the double by taking 3rd in race two.
Wednesday racing
A Fleet
With Admiral Finnegan in charge for the first time there was some trepidation from the gathered sailors but with Stephen in assistance (more likely in charge) they need not have worried. With a stunning start at the port end, McLaughlins led from start to finish. Some thought Rooney's poor performance a bad omen for the rugby but thankfully Leinster only count on him for support.
B Fleet Report by Stephen Finnegan
The B Fleet was dominated by Anna McNulty and Conor Quinn who were neck and neck at the front throughout the race. The lead changed hands several times but it was Anna who took the win by just twenty seconds. Aidan McKay came in third having fought his way up from the back of the fleet. Tom O’Hare and Sean Lane in a Feva enjoyed crossing the line so much they decided to stay there for a while!! Hannahelisa Smyth perservered to be the only other B fleet boat to finish in the fickle winds.
CLYC SAILORS ON ERIC TWINAME TEAM
Anna McNulty and Connor Quinn represented Northern Ireland at the Eric Twiname's last weekend where they sailed against teams from all over England, Scotland and Wales. Although no silver came home they both sailed very well and Club Coach Chris O’Hare was more than happy with their performance. The experience will no doubt count in their favour for the Topper Ulsters.
