Season off to great start at CLYC

There was a big turnout for the first day of the season at CLYC with 25 boats lining out for two windward leeward races (in preparation for the Laser 2000 Irish Championships). Ian Roche was in charge of affairs with John White kindly lending the use of “Lady Shiela “ as a temporary committee boat. The wind was variable force 2-4 from the west with frequent shifts.

In the first race Henry McLaughlin Junior took advantage of a big port bias on the start line and led from start to finish. The battle for second place was hard fought between the Cranley Boys, Rooney/McDonagh and the McLaughlin Seniors. With a good last downwind leg however the McLaughlins made it a one /two, with Rooney and McDonagh just holding off the Cranleys for third.

The second race saw bunching at the port end of the line and the boats who held this tack for longer took advantage of a big shift. Rooney /McDonagh and McLaughlin Junior made the mistake of tacking off early and paid the price. However on the second beat Rooney stayed close to shore and made up fantastic ground to take first position at the second windward mark. A mis-timed gybe then cost them the race as the McLaughlins stole back the lead. Jim Linton was never far behind and took third with the Cranleys having to settle for fourth.

The B Fleet was dominated by the two squad members Dara O’Connor and Helen McParland who traded first and second places in the two races, and James McNulty did well to get two thirds. Also sailing well were David Corkey, Myles McManus, Anna McNulty and Connor Quinn who all looked very promising despite the difficult conditions.
It wasn’t plain sailing for everyone!

With so many new juniors t
he club have organised a special course for sailors who are new to racing. The coach for the course will be Finbar Bradley who has many years of experience in racing at the club, at National and International level. The course will run over two Saturdays, the 23rd and 30th of April. Sailors have been asked to be changed and ready to launch at 2.00pm and the course will be for two and half to three hours long each day. Contact info@clyc.info for details.
