Talk, Slide Show & Supper, Friday 4-Mar-11

Pat & Olivia Murphy's
9 Years Sailing Round the World
Part 1, Sailing from Ireland to New Zealand
Talk And Slide Show (Part One) on
Friday 4th March 2011 at CLYC, promises to be a most enjoyable and informative evening.
They have recently completed a nine year circumnavigation in their 41ft sailing yacht during which they sailed 40,000 miles and visited 39 countries. This part one talk describes with high quality slides, their two year passage from Ireland to New Zealand by way of the Carribbean, South America, Panama Canal, Galapagos, French Polynesia, Cook Islands, Tonga and the many reefs encountered on the way. The 3,000 mile passage between The Galapagos and French Polynesia took 23 days during which they operated a 3 hour alternating watch system.

Olivia will outline the pros and cons of living and cooking etc. in the continual moving environment of the "Domestic Engineering Department".

Crossing the Atlantic with the "Atlantic Rally for Cruisers" (The ARC) they were awarded the prestigious "Spirit of the Rally Award".

Some of the subjects covered will be how they coped with fire aboard, and how they narrowly avoided crocodile and shark attacks. They recall being caught in a storm between Tonga and New Zealand as the most frightening time they have ever had at sea.

While anchored at the Polynesian Island of Niue, they co-ordinated, over a two day period, the rescue of a fellow yachtsman who developed a serious medical condition.

The above is just a sample of their talk. It promises to be a memorable evening for sailors and non sailors alike.

Starting at 8:00pm SHARP, the talk will last for approximately 90 minutes, and will be followed by supper and bar (a nice curry and other food from Café Calluna).

Cost per person for the talk and the supper - Only £10
